"spode" Definition
- pottery and porcelain (= hard white shiny material made by baking a type of fine clay) made at the Spode factory in Stoke-on-Trent, England. The factory was established by Josiah Spode (1733-97) in 1770 and soon became famous for the quality of its products, which included willow-pattern plates. Since 2009 the company has been owned by Portmeirion Group but the name Spode is still used for its products.
